Our client, Maori TV, is a large government funded Media organisation, that makes a significant contribution to the revitalisation of the Maori language and culture. Their vision is to connect the world to te ao Maori and to do this by creating great content that educates and entertains viewers and enriches New Zealand’s society, culture and heritage.
Keeping people informed with the latest news, providing reliable information, especially in such challenging times, and building a connection to Maori culture for all New Zealanders, has never been so important.
They are currently strengthening their News and Current Affairs department, and, on their behalf, we are recruiting for a talented and experienced News Editor.
The role will report into the Head of News and Current Affairs and will be responsible for providing leadership to a group of Producers (both Linear and Digital Content) and multimedia journalists.
This is an important leadership role, and due to their status as a Public Broadcaster and an essential business during the COVID19 lockdown, you will be entering the organisation (before or after lockdown is over) in a period where they are all under the pump, so your immediate and long-term contribution will be highly valued.
We are looking for someone who can hit the ground running, who walks the talk, and will command the respect and confidence of those in a busy newsroom.
It is also important in this role that you are a te reo Maori speaker with a high level of te Reo Maori written competency.
The Role:
- Operational Leadership: Provide editorial leadership across both linear and digital platforms
- Coaching, developing & managing the performance of the team of producers
- Determining, which stories will best deliver to News and Current Affairs strategic outcomes (content/engagement/utilisation of platforms)
- Lead and ensure the delivery of NCA content meets the audience-centric and digital first approach.
- Ensuring international & national news and trends are being monitored and acted upon as appropriate
- Ensuring the audience value the Maori Television Brand, the content is engaging and relevant and can be accessed across divers platforms
- Service Delivery / Editorial: Quality check of stories prior to publishing across our platforms
- Develop efficient and cost-effective programme formats where relevant.
- Develop new and effective workflows to achieve the best outcomes to achieve daily targets.
- Support the preparation and monitoring of NCA budgets and monitor financial targets
- Ensure high editorial standards are achieved.
- Ensure staff meet their Te Reo Maori language goals and that Maori flourishes as a primary language of day to day use amongst staff
- Leading & managing geographically diverse remote team
- Identifiying training needs and coordianting training as required
- Support the change management process that supports staff and operations to move from a linear first to a digital first way of gathering and publishing NCA content.
About you:
- 5-10 years’ experience in the same or similar role (Within News / Current Affairs environment)
- Te Reo Maori Fluency
- A tertiary qualification in Journalism or a related field such as communications is desired
Skills and attributes relevant to this role:
- Strong time management: Ability to meet scheduled deadlines, make split-second decisions on content, ensure ethical standards are always met, and juggle time training team
- Strong leadership and coaching: Ability to lead, direct, inspire and coach staff on all aspects of newsroom work, from content creation to writing compelling news stories in a manner appropriate to the platform it will be published to.
- Ability to work well with others. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Te Reo and English
- Critical-thinking and problem-solving capabilities: Ability to handle pressure calmly, such as responding to breaking news dispatching crews to the scene and getting someone on the air with an immediate bulletin and/or relevant pictures and written content.
- Understanding of broadcasting industry landscape domestically and internationally
- Branding: Being able to know the target demographics of their Audience.
